Israeli attempt on Mashaal said foiled.
Hamas officials in the Gaza Strip on Monday endorsed reports that the Syrian authorities had thwarted yet another Israeli attempt to assassinate the movement's leader, Khaled Mashaal.
The officials said four Arabs – three men and a woman – were arrested in Damascus recently on charges that they had been sent by the Mossad to kill Mashaal. They did not reveal the identities or nationality of the suspects, but pointed out that they were citizens of a neighboring country – a reference to either Jordan or Lebanon.
Sources in Damascus said the four had been seen watching the home of Mashaal in Damascus for some time. The alleged assassination was to have taken place last month, when Mashaal made a brief visit to the Syrian capital following the assassination of Hamas operative Izz al-Din al-Sheikh Khalil, who was killed when his car was blown up outside his home.
According to the sources Mashaal has moved to Iran or Qatar.
