Uri Avneri: Arafat’s Death will be a Tragedy for Israel
(IsraelNN.com) Radical left-winger Uri Avneri, who once spent time with Yasser Arafat in his Ramallah compound to act as a human shield against IDF troops, told Kol Yisrael Radio this morning that “Arafat’s death will be a tragedy for Israel. There is no substitute for Arafat”.
Avneri stated Arafat is the only “Palestinian leader” who was willing to make “historical compromises” and work “towards peace”.
“Like Moses, Arafat brought his nation to the gates of the promised land”, added Avneri.
Avneri added that it is “absurd” for us to discuss if Arafat will be buried on the Temple Mount or elsewhere, concluding “the Palestinian people will decide where he laid to rest, not us”.
Avneri explained he has been acquainted with Arafat since 1974 and he is certain that Arafat and those who will come after him are yearning for peace with Israel. The self-proclaimed peace activist added that if a Palestinian state is established in all of Judea, Samaria, and Gaza, with eastern Jerusalem serving as its capital, a solution can be worked out between the PA and Israel.
